How the Churn Machine Runs
Licensing agreements are contracts with expiration dates, and they’re deliberately short:
- Typical exclusive window: 12–24 months, then the title either renews at higher cost or migrates to a rival.
- Exclusive-first policy shifts — studios increasingly pull licensed catalog back to their own platforms, accelerating the drain on aggregators.
- Silent removal is standard practice — platforms notify neither subscribers nor content owners’ customers; the title simply stops returning in search.
What the Churn Numbers Look Like
